NORTHERN CYPRUS
The dense forests of the Kyrenia Mountains are a haven for a wide variety of bird life, and trails through the trees ensure you can get up close without disturbing the wildlife. No less than 374 species of bird visit the island each year and seven of them are found only in North Cyprus. The mountains are ideal for spotting birds of prey such as the griffon vulture and peregrine falcons. You can also spot a wide variety of sea birds on the rugged coastline around the Karpas peninsula.
The near-deserted beaches of North Cyprus are ideal nesting sites for thousands of breeding green and loggerhead turtles. Every year, the females climb up the shore to bury their eggs in sandy nests, before returning to the sea. The tiny turtles hatchlings then make the perilous journey back to the sea weeks later. The best way to watch the turtles during the breeding season is to join a conservation project walk, as the nest sites themselves are protected and should not be disturbed.
