Cyprus has been settled since around 8500BC, when it was famous for its copper mines. During ancient times, every major power wanted Cyprus, from the Phoenicians to the Romans, who built magnificent cities in North Cyprus that you can visit today. Crusaders such as Richard the Lionheart stopped on North Cyprus as well, building huge castles in the mountains. The French Lusignan kings made Cyprus grand, the Venetians made it elegant, and the Ottomans brought art and order to the island for five hundred years.
The British couldn’t resist Cyprus either, and the island played an important part in both World Wars. In 1974, the problems between the Turkish and Greek Cypriots came to a head, and Cyprus was divided by the famous Green Line. Nowadays the border is open for free traffic between North Cyprus and the south, and ensures everyone can enjoy this island’s treasures for themselves.
